The design of the medals paid homage to Canada's rich natural and cultural diversity. With its unique sea-to-sky landscape, the medals combined the country's patterns and textures in a balance connecting the land and people.

Participation medals were made of silvered bronze and given to athletes and officials. A volunteer medal was also created that featured graphics inspired by Canada's natural and cultural diversity on the front with the same back as the athlete participation medal.
