The PyeongChang Olympic emblem featured on the front of the medal is comprised of Hangul shapes that form the first consonants of each syllable in the word PyeongChang. The first character also represents a gathering place where the three elements of Cheon-ji-in - heaven, earth, and human - are in harmony. The second character symbolizes snow and ice as well as athletes' stellar performances.

Participation medals were made from cupro-nickel and for the first time, only athletes received participation medals.
