The vision statement of the Olympic Winter Games 2002 "Light the Fire Within" is etched into the back of the medal. It was also added to the front of the prize medal marking the first time that the theme of the Games was included on a medal.

Participation medals were made from bronze and given to athletes and officials. A similar medal was made for volunteers but only has one athlete standing with arm outstretched on the front.
