The Nagano Olympic emblem on the back of the medal is the Snowflower with each petal representing an athlete in a winter sport arranged in a hexagonal snowflake pattern.

Participation medals were made of bronze by different manufacturers causing color and finish variations from gold bronze to dull bronze. Medals were given to athletes and officials.
