The Sarajevo Olympic emblem on the front of the medal symbolizes a stylized snowflake featuring a traditional design of embroidery produced in the Sarajevo region.

Participation medals were made with the same design in different finishes of bronze in small, medium and large sizes. Medium and large medals were given to dignitaries and officials, and small bronze medals given to athletes and officials.

The silver participation medal was recently discovered and documented and is considered very rare.
