Professor Greco's design for the participation medal symbolized victories in the Olympic Games and their echoes throughout the world. Greco was also commissioned to create a giant statue symbolizing the Olympic torch.

Participation medals were made of bronze and given to athletes and officials. Variations of this medal exist in gilt bronze with different sizes and thicknesses of bronze. The small gilt medal in the Crawford Family collection is one of only five medals struck.
