Swimmer Helene Madison, with three gold medals, was the medal leader in gold medals for the Los Angeles 1932 Games. She set an Olympic record in the 100-meter freestyle and a world record in the 400 freestyle.

Better known as Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year (six times), Mildred "Babe" Didrikson, was only allowed to enter three events at the 1932 Games. In the events she competed in - 80-meter hurdles, high jump and javeling throw - Didrikson set two world records and one Olympic record while winning two golds and one silver.

Due to The Depression and the geographical isolation of California, participation in the Games was the lowest since 1904; less than half as many athletes competed in Los Angeles as in 1928.

The concept of the Olympic Village debuted at these Games.
