Lake Placid hosting the 1932 Olympic Winter Games was the brainchild of Godfrey Dewey, son of Melvil Dewey, inventor of the Dewey Decimal System.
Both Irving Jaffee and Jack Shea of the United States won two gold medals in speedskating in Lake Placid, the only two double gold medalists of the Games. Shea also took the athlete's oath for all participants.
