Ivan Brown and Al Washbond won the United States' only gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch in two-man bobsled. In their first run, they had almost a three-second lead over the rest of the competitors that no other team could surmount.

The bronze medal in two-man bobsled went to the USA-2 team piloted by Gil Colgate, Jr., the great-grandson of William Colgate, founder of the toothpaste and soap company Colgate.

A symbolic fire was lit during the Olympic Winter Games for the first time, and alpine skiing events were included for the first time.

Eisstockschiessen, more commonly known as Bavarian curling, as well as military ski patrol, the precusor to biathlon, were demonstration sports at Garmisch.
