Olympic Prize Medals : A selection of Olympic prize medals collected and donated by Gordy and Dona Crawford

This series of Olympic prize medals is one of the most complete collections in the world beginning with the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896. The Crawford Family donated their collection of Olympic medals to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee in August 2018. This is the first opportunity to view the collection, which will later be loaned to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum. Olympic prize medals have evolved over time from presentation in a box to draping over the head on a ribbon over chain. Olympic Games medals became standardized in 1928 with Nike, the goddess of victory seated on the front. For Athens 2004 and thereafter, Victory took flight in the center of the Olympic stadium in Athens, Greece. Olympic Winter Games medals are all unique and reflect elements indicative of the region or host city of the Games.
