Gymnast Simone Biles won four gold medals at Rio, including in the individual all-around. This marked the fourth Olympic Games in a row that a member of Team USA won gold in this event: Carly Patterson (2004), Nastia Liukin (2008), Gabby Douglas (2012) and Biles (2016).

The Rio prize medals were made with sustainability at their heart. The silver and bronze medals were produced using 30 percent recycled materials. The gold medals are completely free of mercury using recycled raw silver coming from leftover mirrors, waste solders and X-ray plates.
