Willis Lee, a distant relative of General Robert E. Lee, won seven medals at the 1920 Games in shooting events. Lee served in the United States Navy in both WWI and WWII rising to the rank of Vice-Admiral before his death in 1945.

The Brabo Fountain featured on the back of the prize medals is a monument that stands in the Grote Markt, in front of Antwerp City Hall. The fountain commemorates the legend of the city's origin, involving a Roman Army Captain and a giant that terrorized the Schelde River that flows through Antwerp.
During the Opening Ceremony, the Olympic flag with the five rings signifying the universality of the Olympic Games was raised for the first time at an Olympic Games.
