Tenley Albright won her first Olympic medal in women's singles figure skating (silver) as well as the first of five consecutive national titles in 1952. All the more amazing when considering Albright contracted polio at the age of 12.

For the first time the Olympic Winter Games appeared in Norway, the birthplace of modern skiing, and computers were used for the first time in figure skating to calculate the scores awarded by the different judges for the compulsory and free programs. This enabled an athlete's score to be given immediately.
