Fun fact(s):
Speedskater Terry McDermott earned the only gold medal for the United States, winning the men's 500-meter while establishing a new Olympic record. In 1980, he spoke the official's oath at the Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1980.

The 1964 Winter Games prize medals were the first to use a cloth ribbon to suspend the medal around the athlete's neck.
