Olympic Winter Games Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956 Medals

Front: Head of Nike, goddess of victory, crowned with the Olympic rings, torch to right in foreground Head encircled by Italian legend, "Giochi Olimpici Invernali" [Winter Olympic Games].

Back: Ice crystal superimposed over Mt. Pomagagnon of the Dolomites south of Cortina. Olympic motto and "Cortina 1956" surrounds the crystal.

Medals presented in leather cases: gold medal in green leather, silver in white leather and bronze in a red leather case.

Fun fact(s):
Cortina 1956 marked the last time figure skating took place outside and Americans swept the men's singles podium with brothers Hayes Jenkins (gold) and David Jenkins (bronze) bookending Ronnie Roberston (silver). David Jenkins would go on to win his own gold medal in Squaw Valley in 1960.

The same design was used for the prize medals and commemorative participation medals for Cortina 1956. Commemorative medals were of a smaller diameter, produced in gold, silver and bronze created for high officials and athletes.
